Project Update!

I am almost completely done with my layout of my Powtoon I am making. I will finish it today and then put it all together in the video. For the most part I have obtained all the information I need to add my videos, but today I laid it all out figuring out exactly how I want it to be added into the visual I am making!

Analyzing Argumentative Videos

I analyzed a video by the Youtube Channel named AsapScience named, “The War On Science,” which was a video written/drawn visuals with dry erase markers and board that are created along with a voice-over explaining what you are watching.

By carefully and repeatedly watching this video i have found many specific persuasive strategies such as the the obvious well-constructed and researched facts. Along with their references, the facts are tied along to the argument and specifically explain the way the evidence is supporting the makers argument. Meanwhile, there is slow, soft, and sad music playing in the background to set the appropriate feeling of sorrow and sympathy. I also find the use of colors appealing because brighter colors are used to represent the achievements science has made, and darker colors are representing the bad things. I have watched as there are many different reasons given for you to support their belief, which all seem to tie back to the viewer and how they benefit from science as well as all other people. The creator also carefully includes real-life pictures that are very attractive to ones eye that make you yearn to keep watching and think, “Why would I let these beautiful sites of nature go away?” With these idea in your mind along with the images you are given a sense of pity that  makes the audience want to give in and agree with the author. There is also comparison to other programs beside scientific ones such as NASA, constructing a good concession and rebuttal for their argument. The author also continues to mention cost, which overall effects everyone. Again, making connections to the audience (ethos). All of this ties back to the important fact that science effects all in drastic and very tiny ways we might overlook everyday. Which is how ethos, pathos, and logos are all used in this argumentative video.

Website Analysis

Hillary Clinton is a currently running for democratic nominee. The candidate from New York City has served as Secretary of State, First Lady of Arkansas, a practicing lawyer and law professor. Overlooking Hillary’s website I have noticed many things. I’ve noticed she uses more pathos appeal to her viewers rather than ethical and logical. In which means that she tends to target her audience’s feelings and emotions to events.
Mrs. Clinton’s website gives me the impression that her audience is “family” people. This includes individuals that have families, come from small unpopular towns, have financial issues. She expresses this by showing she too has came from a fairly small and unpopular town. She states she was once a normal girl with motivations just like any normal girl now. Revealing all of the activities she participated in and that these are not much different from the things that her viewers children do. I have found this evidence from reading her bio and seeing all of her pictures that she includes. The photographs project old fashioned thoughts, and your average 1940s child.
The candidate does not appeal to ethos very much, but in the few areas where she does, she uses illustrations. For example, the symbols that she uses on her website that get her viewers to visit her other social media pages and the many photographs poster of her physically reaching out and waving to her audiences after and before her appearances. She gives the impression that she is a ‘family lady’, she has many photos of families and has many ‘family friendly’ events posted. She projects a caring, kind, and educated woman that is like everyone else and that’s why she needs their support.
Hillary appeals to logos on her website using long speeches and thoughts on political issues that seem to be a big deal to the viewers and audience she’s targeting. Specifically she has many different people in videos stating their opinions and persuading her viewers to agree. The effect of the videos is to show not only that many people support her argument but also that they are ‘normal’ or ‘average’ people like her supporters and furthermore, herself.
Hillary Clinton appeals to pathos in the way that she uses, once again, a lot of pictures that connect her to her audience. She tries to relate to them she they will feel as if they have a bond and they are ‘in it together’, facing the political problems together, but she is fighting for them.
I believe my candidate’s argument is effective because it connects her to her viewers, which is her big goal. If they are the same, they have the same beliefs, issues, then her audience will support her in all of her decisions.
